HOW TO AVOID BAD BREATH ON VALENTINE’S DAY

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there’s only one thing that can ruin the most romantic night of the year…bad breath! Teeth and oral hygiene, believe it or not, is what most people notice about a potential match, so it’s best to be on your game and sort the breath out. Here are some tips to follow before and during your date:

Before the date:

  1. Brush your teeth and clean your tongue. Cleaning your tongue will remove bacteria, food debris & fungi and will therefore reduce any bad odour coming from the mouth.
  2. Floss! Flossing not only gets rid of any embarrassing herbs you may have stuck in between your teeth from lunch, but also helps to get rid of bad breath. The bacteria and plaque built up in between your teeth can start to smell when not removed.


 

During the date:

  1. Avoid obvious foods that can cause bad breath, like onions & garlic.
  2. Although you may think a glass of champagne is a must on Valentine’s Day you may reconsider when you learn that alcohol causes bad breath! Alcohol reduces the amount of saliva in the mouth, a natural defence to bad breath, which also dries out the mouth.
  3. If you can’t resist one glass of bubbles, have a few glasses of water too to balance it out and encourage more saliva production in the mouth.
  4. Stay away from dairy products such as stinky cheese & milk, as they don’t exactly make your mouth smell like a bouquet of roses!
  5. When it comes to dessert, again, you may think Valentine’s Day isn’t complete without chocolates & sweets. However, if you wish to stay clear from bad breath, stick to desserts full of berries, oranges or apples, which will strengthen your breath by increasing saliva production.
